The Portsmouth High School chapter of the National Honor Society is named in honor of Miss Emily Ball. Our chapter of the National Honor Society at Portsmouth High School was chartered February 25, 1927. Membership in the Emily Ball chapter of the Naitonal Honor Society requires that a student effectively demonstrates the four essential qualities held in high esteem by the National Honor Society: SCHOLARSHIP, SERVICE, CHARACTER, and LEADERSHIP.

Scholarship: Scholarship is a commitment to learning. When a student studies hard and dilligently completes her or her assignments, is shows a commitment to acquring an education. Scholarship is essential to all levels of education, and directly influences future achievements.

Service: Service may be expressed in many ways. In the course of any given day, we may find an opportunity to serve others. Willingness to work without compensation of recognition for the benefit of others is a quality desired in our members. We, in search of the true meaning of service, are committed to such an idea in hopes of building a better tomorrow.

Character: Character is the force within each of us whic distinguishes us from so many others. Without character, we cannot respect ourselves nor hope to attain the repsect of our peers and community. When fully developed, character guides us through our struggle to continually make the right choices. Character governs our selfcontrol. We must truly seek to be as we appear to others, and by demonstrating qualities such as reliability, honesty, and sincerity, we hope that it may show our true character.

Leadership: Leadership should have profound influence on not only school but also the community. In the school evnironment, a leader should take the initiative in class and in extracurricular activities, and train and encourage others to do the same. In the community, a leader should be willing to sacrifice personal interests for the betterment of others. Leadership is always needed, and is, thus, an essential charge to each of our members and candidates.
